Putin names Belarus Russia’s serious partner in nuclear energy field

MOSCOW, 26 September (BelTA) – Belarus is a serious partner of Russia in the field of nuclear energy. President of Russia Vladimir Putin made the statement as he met with Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko in the Kremlin on 26 September, BelTA has learned.

First of all, the Russian head of state thanked the Belarusian counterpart for taking part in the international forum World Atomic Week, which is dedicated to the 80th anniversary since the foundation of Russia’s nuclear industry. “Essentially it is our common holiday. First of all, because it marks 80 years since the foundation of the nuclear industry in the USSR and we were together at this time. And secondly, today Belarus has become our serious partner in the field of nuclear energy because the first nuclear power plant has been created in Belarus and moreover, an industry has been established in Belarus, which specialists now work with Rosatom to build nuclear installations in third countries. And certainly, one cannot help but feel joy about it,” Vladimir Putin said.

He remarked that according to Belarusian data, about 40% of the country’s electricity is generated by the Belarusian nuclear power plant. It saves a substantial amount of other energy resources, including natural gas. “It has created a competitor for Gazprom, which simply supplied a primary energy product, and Belarus bought it. It keeps buying now but certainly the needs have decreased,” the Russian president noted.
