VITEBSK, 14 May (BelTA) – The avant-garde group of artists UNOVIS (the abbreviation of The Champions of the New Art in Russian) is one of the main achievements of Belarusian culture, Director of the Vitebsk Center for Contemporary Art and the History Museum of the Vitebsk People's Art School Andrei Dukhovnikov said as he took part in the opening ceremony of the online exhibition “The Artist and the City”, BelTA has learned.

According to Andrei Dukhovnikov, it is important for Belarusians to realize that they should be proud of UNOVIS and its members. “The 100th anniversary of UNOVIS is an event that we have made a national treasure. Despite the fact that the group, as well as the Russian avant-garde movement in general, is an international phenomenon, UNOVIS is one of the greatest achievements of Belarusian culture,” he believes.

He pointed out that the program of the anniversary celebrations in February included a large conference, several exhibitions and other events in Vitebsk and Minsk. More events timed to UNOVIS anniversary await Vitebsk residents in the future.

Andrei Dukhovnikov thanked people and organizations who joined the celebrations of UNOVIS anniversary, including the Belarusian-Jewish Cultural Heritage Center and commercial partners.

The exhibition “The Artist and the City” is the ninth edition of the project. On 14 May, it opened in the online format for the first time. People can visit the exhibition from home. A virtual tour of Yakub Kolas Square in Minsk is available on the website of the project. The tour offers a panoramic view of cubical structures with reproductions of 32 works by 16 artists from Vitebsk who shared the ideas of suprematism. The organizers hope to open a physical exhibition in Minsk in July and move it to Vitebsk in September.
