Myasnikovich calls for maintaining interfaith peace in Belarus

MINK, 15 November (BelTA) - Interfaith peace in Belarus is an achievement that we need to cherish and protect, Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly Mikhail Myasnikovich said as he met with President of the Conference of European Rabbis, Chief Rabbi of Moscow Pinchas Goldschmidt, BelTA has learned.

“Belarus is a multiethnic country where representatives of various faiths live in peace and accord,” Mikhail Myasnikovich said. “This is a great achievement which needs to be safeguarded, preserved and developed. The president, the government, and Parliament are creating the necessary conditions for this,” Mikhail Myasnikovich noted.

“These issues are very important to us, and regardless of the diaspora we try to make sure the voice of minorities is always heard and taken into account. For many years the Belarusians have lived side by side with the Jewish people, and we do everything to support this historical experience with new interesting projects,” the Speaker said referring to economic and investment projects.

He also expressed the hope that the meeting of the permanent committee of the Conference of European Rabbis, which is running in Minsk these days, will be fruitful and productive.

Pinchas Goldschmidt, for his part, thanked for the warm reception. He also noted the freedom of religion and belief in Belarus.
