MINSK, 20 October (BelTA) – The Belarusian economic development model is built on a commitment to the concept of sustainable development, Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Sergei Rachkov said as he took part in a meeting of the Bureau of the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held as part of the 151st IPU Assembly in Geneva, the press service of the House of Representatives told BelTA.

Addressing the IPU Standing Committee on Sustainable Development, Sergei Rachkov outlined Belarus’ economic priorities for creating a just and sustainable world economy.

According to him, Belarus’ economic model, shaped throughout its 30 years of sovereignty, is built on a commitment to the concept of sustainable development, as evidenced by the country’s progress reports on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The MP noted that the Belarusian economy has been operating for several years under tough external economic restrictions, experiencing the impact of the Western sanction policy. Sergei Rachkov stated that there is no such thing as “fair” sanctions.

He emphasized that sanctions violate international law and are counterproductive and short-sighted. These measures only serve to escalate tensions, damage trust, accelerate the decline in relations, and violate basic human rights.

“Belarus calls for the complete, unconditional, and irreversible cessation of the criminal practice of applying unilateral coercive measures and for the revocation of those already imposed without the approval of the UN Security Council and in violation of international law,” Sergei Rachkov said.
