Minsk suggested as venue for next Europe v USA match

Minsk suggested as venue for next Europe v USA match

MINSK, 9 September (BelTA) – Minsk is ready to host the next Europe v USA match in 2021. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko put forward the suggestion during the opening ceremony of the Match Europe v USA on 9 September, BelTA has learned.

As per rules the next Europe v USA match is supposed to take place in the USA in 2021 because it will be the country’s turn to host the competition. However, Aleksandr Lukashenko pointed out that in 2021 the USA will host a world track and field athletics championship and the rules disallow combining the competitions.

“We suggest you should spend these two years in Belarus. Don’t rush to the faraway Europe or America. If you trust us with it, we will arrange another match at an even higher standard,” Aleksandr Lukashenko told top officials of the International Association of Athletics Federations and the European Athletic Association.

Aleksandr Lukashenko jokingly noted that in this manner for the duration of the competitions in 2021 Minsk would be able to become the capital of the United States of America. Aleksandr Lukashenko said he would come to terms with Donald Trump (the Belarusian head of state is confident that he would be re-elected for another term). “I think he will come here to this stadium, to the capital of the next athletic games, a match of the century,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
