Minister: Many of Belarus’ healthcare successes owed to radiology

MINSK, 25 October (BelTA) – Achievements of the Belarusian healthcare system have to do in many ways with the development of radiology, Belarus’ Healthcare Minister Valery Malashko has said at the First Congress of the Belarusian Society of Radiologists, BelTA has learned.

Today’s diagnostic radiology is a high-tech and fast-growing medical specialty, the minister noted. Many achievements of Belarusian specialists in such types of specialized medical care as cardiovascular surgery, transplant surgery, oncology, and hematology are well known outside the country. Maternal and infant mortality rates are on par with those in leading European countries. According to Valery Malashko, these successes could not have been achieved without adequate development of the diagnostic radiology service; therefore diagnostic radiology assumes a special role in the healthcare system.

Belarusian radiology has a strong scientific capacity. It boasts 28 patents and 22 inventor’s certificates. “Our radiologists are engaged in 10 research programs and projects. 13 monographs, 38 study guides and practice guidelines for doctors. This is a great deal of research work,” added Irina Abelskaya, Doctor of Medicine, Head of the Belarusian Society of Radiologists, Head Physician of the Republican Clinical Medical Center of the Belarus President Property Management Directorate.

The First Congress of the Belarusian Society of Radiologists is taking place in Minsk on 25-26 October. Belarusian and foreign experts are delivering reports on the latest accomplishments in radiology, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound diagnostics, nuclear medicine, and radiation safety. According to Irina Abelskaya, this congress is a very important event for the entire healthcare system. According to the World Health Organization, 80% of diagnoses are made using diagnostic radiology.
