Matviyenko: Belarus, Russia could mitigate negative global trends by joint economic efforts

MINSK, 7 June (BelTA) – Coordinated economic efforts of Belarus and Russia helped the two countries mitigate negative global trends, Chairperson of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia Valentina Matviyenko told reporters after the talks with Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich on 7 June, BelTA has learned.

Valentina Matviyenko remarked that the bilateral meeting focused on various aspects of Belarus-Russia relations. She stressed that the unfavorable global situation has a certain impact on the economies of the two countries. “Nevertheless, coordinated efforts aimed at developing the manufacturing sector and agriculture, solid business ties, cooperation, and joint projects helped mitigate negative global trends. In spite of the existing difficulties, the actual volume of mutual trade between our countries has been preserved,” she said.

The chairperson of the Federation Council stressed that the priorities of the Russian-Belarusian cooperation have been determined by the presidents of the two countries who are in constant dialogue. Valentina Matviyenko also made an emphasis on the enhancement of economic and investment cooperation.

The Union State should prioritize the programs of coordinated import substitution because the economies of the two countries should be complementary. It is also planned to promote the use of new technologies, innovations, and the economy of knowledge.
