Match Europe v USA described as main event prior to 2019 IAAF World Championships

MINSK, 9 September (BelTA) – Minsk Dinamo Stadium will become a center of attraction for all the athletics fans as the main sport arena of the Belarusian capital will be hosting The Match Europe v USA on 9-10 September, BelTA has learned.

According to initiator of this historic match, President of the European Athletics Association Svein Arne Hansen, Minsk has been gradually becoming a big athletics center, while the upcoming match will be the main event in the European sport calendar ahead of the 2019 IAAF World Championships in Doha. He stressed that European leading athletes were happy to accept the invitation to defend the honor of their continent. Svein Arne Hansen expressed hope that such meetings will become regular. “I would like people to remember the show in Minsk which is to be the first one of the kind,” he added.

According to CEO for USA Track & Field Max Siegel, The Match Europe v USA in Minsk will no doubt be a star-studded meeting. Team USA will include many Olympic and world champions, as well as talented rising stars. Among them are Allyson Felix, the most titled athlete in the history of the Olympic Games and world championships, Michelle Carter, the first and only U.S. Olympic champion in shot put, long jumper Brittney Reese, Courtney Okolo (400m), Brianna McNeal (100m Hurdles), and Mike Rodgers (100m).

Fourteen Belarusians will make part of Team Europe. Among them are Maksim Nedasekau (high jump), Elvira Herman (100m Hurdles), Tatsiana Khaladovich (javelin throw), Nastassia Mironchyk-Ivanova (long jump). Apart from Belarusians, Team Europe will include many titled athletes, for example, discus thrower from Croatia Sandra Perkovic, Sweden’s pole vaulter Armand Duplantis.

Chairman of the Belarusian Athletics Federation Vadim Devyatovsky is confident that The Match Europe v USA will receive wide coverage in the world sport arena. In his words, The Match Europe v USA in Minsk is a big present for Belarusian athletes. Here the history of the match will be written. In 1973, Dinamo Stadium in Minsk hosted the historical match between the USSR and the United States.

The Match Europe v USA is due to take place at Minsk’s Dinamo Stadium on 9-10 September. The competitions will start at 19.00 Minsk time. The competitions will include hammer throw, javelin throw, discus throw, 100 meters, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, 200 meters, 400 meters, 400m hurdles, 800 meters, 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters, 3,000 meters steeplechase, 4x100 meters relay, mixed relay (200-200-400-800 meters), shot put, triple jump, high jump, long jump, pole vault.

Each discipline will feature eight athletes (four from Europe and four from the United States). The winner of the competition in each discipline will get €7,000, the silver medalist - €5,000, the bronze medalist - €4,000.

The rights to broadcast the event have already been acquired by Belarus 5, Czech TV (the Czech Republic), DR (Denmark), YLE (Finland), France TV (France), BBC (the UK), MTV (Hungary), LT (Lithuania), TVP (Poland), RTS (Serbia), SR (Sweden), NBC (the United States).
