Makei: Belarus is ready to increase its contribution to security and stability of Europe

MINSK, 3 December (BelTA) – Belarus is ready to increase its contribution to ensuring security and stability in Europe, Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said when speaking at a plenary meeting of the 22nd OSCE Ministerial Council in Belgrade, BelTA has learned.

According to the minister, Belarus is ready to share its experience and increase its contribution to the common efforts in the fight against terrorism and illegal migration and support the peaceful process in Ukraine. “Only safe and stable Europe can secure the sustainable development and progress in economic, environmental and humanitarian areas,” said Vladimir Makei.

Vladimir Makei highlighted the factors that reduce the effectiveness of the OSCE. Thus, the crisis of mutual trust erodes the foundations of cooperation in all dimensions of security and weakens the organization. "There is a need to abandon attempts to use the organization to advance narrow national interests, to strengthen own security at the expense of partners, create and expand the zones of influence. To overcome the existing contradictions it is crucial to pursue a mutually respectful dialogue, which is unthinkable in the context of sanctions and restrictive measures,” Vladimir Makei is convinced.

According to him, the OSCE can and should be a platform for positions rapprochement and the formation of common approaches in all security dimensions. “The organization is able and should turn into a promoter of effective actions against security threats. This means its future,” the minister stressed.
