Lukashenko sees disruption of peace talks as possible goal of drone attack on Putin’s residence

MINSK, 31 December (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko does not rule out the possibility that the drone attack on the Russian president’s residence in Novgorod Oblast was supposed to disrupt the negotiations on a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine. The Belarusian head of state made the relevant statement in front of reporters in Minsk on 31 December, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “They may have wanted to provoke Putin at a time when peace is already close. In order to disrupt this negotiation process. It is a point of view. Putin may have embraced some escalation. He may have rejected the peaceful way. But in the morning I’ve already noticed: nothing like that. It is what Putin is all about. He doesn’t rush. And he is right. No need to rush. If a peaceful track is available, we should follow it.”

“Well, if someone does not want it and continues staging these provocations, it is understandable what we will end up with. This is why I would like to… I wanted to say I would like to give advice. But why should I offer them advice? People in Ukraine disregard advices and do things their own way. But I wanted to warn that it will end in a disaster. Russia has the resources to attack the decision-making centers and demolish them completely,” the president pointed out.

“It is necessary to stop. It is necessary to come to an agreement on peace next year after all. And I would very much like Donald Trump to be sincere in this regard. I don’t want it to be a game or a play where one and the same role is played by Trump and the West as a whole or European states. For some reason I suspect that if it is so, then our ‘English brothers’ are behind it. It is quite possible,” the head of state said.

“A terrorist attack against a president does not often happen. And they do not happen without someone big authorizing it. From my experience,” the president stated.

“Vladimir Aleksandrovich [Zelensky] should not go down this path. He has already ruined Europe’s blooming part. Well, he will ruin it completely. He shouldn’t go down this path. It is necessary to strike a deal before it is too late,” Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed.
