Lukashenko describes Great Patriotic War victory as universal, indivisible

ASHGABAT, 11 October (BelTA) – The victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War is universal and indivisible, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at the meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of State speaking about the address in connection with the 75th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic which will be adopted at the summit in Ashgabat on 11 October, BelTA has learned.

The head of state emphasized that in modern conditions when new military conflicts emerge CIS countries should consolidate efforts and act together. In his opinion, it is especially important in connection with the forthcoming 75th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War victory. “Back then, as the president of Azerbaijan said and the prime minister of Armenia, by way, supported him, nobody divided the victory. All nations fought together and had a common goal. Therefore, this date calls for unity at this stage,” the Belarusian leader said.

It is worth saying that at the meeting of the CIS Heads of State Council in the narrow format Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan discussed some narratives concerning the war and attitudes to certain historical personalities in their speeches.

In his speech, Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized that the Soviet people won that war. “People died in besieged Brest Fortress and Leningrad, fought at Stalingrad and Kursk, liberated Europe and penetrated Berlin. Russian, Belarusian, Ukrainian, Kazakh, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Moldovan, Georgian, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Turkmen and Uzbek people did not think about their national identity. They we united when they hoisted the Red Flag on the top of the Reichstag. It means that our victory should be universal and indivisible!” the head of state said.

The head of state remarked that the 75th anniversary of Belarus’ liberation was marked in 2019. “Our people paid a heavy price for freedom – one third of Belarusians died in the war on fascism. We still feel the consequences of that heinous war,” he said.

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, by the signing of the address the sides once again demonstrate their unity and friendship, careful attitude to their common great history. “By joint efforts we are trying to prevent attempts to distort and falsify history. Together we advocate for resuming a comprehensive international dialogue on the enhancement of the system of global security and confidence-building measures,” the Belarusian leader emphasized.

Besides, the president recalled another common problem, which is the Chernobyl accident. Belarus suffered a severe blow from it. “This is a heavy burden for us – the consequences of the Great Patriotic War and other issues,” he stressed.
