Lukashenko: Belarusian Academy of Sciences needs ‘serious overhaul’

MINSK, 5 May (BelTA) – The activities of the Belarusian Academy of Sciences needs a serious overhaul, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he got familiar with electric transport developments of Belarusian scientists, BelTA has learned.

“The work of the Academy of Sciences needs a serious overhaul. It is not easy, though. These are really smart, talented people. We need to look into the main areas of the Academy’s activities, to see how our decisions are implemented,” the head of state said.

The president noted that he decided to get familiar with electric transport developments. “I wanted to see how far you have advanced and how much the words correspond to deeds," the Belarusian leader said.

The expected electricity surplus in the country and low environmental footprint are the main reasons for developing electric transport in the country, the president said.

In general, Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed that science should be actively involved in the country’s development within the next five years, given the growing level of technological competition in the world. “We need to survive in this tough competition to remain as a nation and to keep this piece of land we live on,” the president said.
