Lukashenko: Belarus-Ukraine border should not impede movement of people

ZHITOMIR, 4 October (BelTA) – The border between Belarus and Ukraine should not be  an obstacle for the movement of people, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at an expanded-participation meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky on 4 October, BelTA has learned.

“I have promised [the Ukrainian president] that there will not be any problems here,” the Belarusian leader said.

“Volodymyr Zelensky was absolutely right to raise this issue. I felt reproach in his voice. The Belarus-Ukraine border should not be an obstacle for people’s movement. I have sworn that this will never happen. We have never obstructed the movement of Ukrainian and Belarusian nationals and will never do it,” the Belarusian head of state said.

He emphasized that the Belarusian border is open for residents of the adjacent areas who come to Belarus to pick up berries and mushrooms.

“I am sick and tired of talking about the “threats” on the part of Belarus and Ukraine. .. By the way, we have hardly talked about it. I have said: do not worry, we will stick to this policy. Keep in mind that people living in the north [in Belarus] are another nation, but they are not strangers to you. I treat Ukrainians as our people who live here,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
