MINSK, 16 January (BelTA) - Latvia will take measures to facilitate border crossing during the 2021 IIHF World Championship, Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins said at a joint meeting of the Belarusian and Latvian organizing committees for the 2021 IIHF World Championship in Minsk on 16 January, BelTA has learned.

“Latvia is part of the Schengen area, so we cannot make any decisions on our own that are at odds with the system. As for building up the capacities at checkpoints, we are already working on this to ensure we can accommodate any number of applications, and to make the process as smooth as possible within the Schengen area,” he said.

He also noted that there will be a lot of fans from Belarus and Latvia and urged to make efforts to attract more fans from third countries.

Belarusian Prime Minister Sergei Rumas added that the countries do not have complicated issues as they are preparing for the 2021 IIHF World Cup. The work is going as planned. “Both sides seek to ensure that the 2021 IIHF World Championship is the most successful in the history of hockey,” he said.
