Japanese specialists praise Belarus’ efforts to deal with Chernobyl consequences

MINSK, 25 April (BelTA) – Belarus’ experience of dealing with consequences of the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant has been highly appreciated by the Japanese specialists, who have been involved in the cleanup operations after the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The statement was made by Vladimir Pertsov, director of the representative office of the interstate television and radio company Mir in Belarus, during the TV show Club of Editors aired by the TV channel Belarus One on 24 April, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Pertsov shared his own experience of talking to a representative of the Japanese company that had bought a large number of radiation-metering instruments in Belarus. Quoting the opinion of the Japanese side, Vladimir Pertsov noted that Belarus has advanced very far in matters of radiation safety and the cleanup of Chernobyl aftereffects.

If Belarus possessed additional financial reserves, it could have demonstrated a fine example of a civilized and skillful response to a man-caused emergency to the international community, believes Vladimir Pertsov. “It was not our accident. The Chernobyl nuclear power plant is located in Ukraine but Belarus is the most affected country. And our country has done a lot to deal with the consequences. If we had more money — over $20 billion has been spent on alleviating consequences of the disaster — we could have demonstrated what we can do to the entire world,” he said.
