MINSK, 7 July (BelTA) – Lithuania will assist Belarus in improving relations with the European Union, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Lithuania to Belarus Evaldas Ignatavicius said at the meeting with Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko on 7 July, BelTA has learned.

“Lithuania is a country which is not foreign to Belarus. We are neighbors. We were one state for several hundreds of years. We lived side by side, never fought against each other,” the diplomat noted. He stressed that today the countries have good neighborly relations and share a 700km long border. “Today we have good economic and cultural relations,” said Evaldas Ignatavicius.

“We share common past. I hope we will share common future in a big safe Europe,” the diplomat said. In his words, Lithuania values Belarus as a neighbor, as an important regions state, and also welcomes its efforts to establish peace and good neighborliness in the region. “It is very important for us,” the Ambassador said.

Lithuania has been an EU member for 12 years. Over all these years the country has sought to build the best relations between Belarus and the EU. Lithuania is happy about the progress achieved in recent years. We will continue following this path of good neighborliness and promote the relations both on the bilateral level and between Belarus and the European Union,” Evaldas Ignatavicius said.
