Georgian ambassador optimistic about cooperation prospects with Belarus

Georgian ambassador optimistic about cooperation prospects with Belarus

MINSK, 11 March (BelTA) - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to Belarus Giorgi Saganelidze, who presented his credentials to Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 11 March, told the media he was optimistic about the prospects of bilateral cooperation, BelTA has learned.

The diplomat noted that he was starting his mission as ambassador “in the best mood,” especially since this year's winter in Minsk was warm and quite sunny, while the Belarusian people have always been kind and friendly. The ambassador knows this from personal experience, as he has been Georgia's Charge d'Affaires in Belarus since September 2023.

“There is a mutual understanding that we need to bring our peoples, who have a very positive attitude towards each other, closer together, that we need to develop cooperation further,” said Giorgi Saganelidze. “We realize that the current times are not easy. Accordingly, we need to find common ground and develop our bilateral relations in the areas that are beneficial to both countries. I think we can do it.”

Regarding the possibility of returning the relations between Belarus and Georgia to the previous level of cooperation or at least approaching it, the diplomat said: “We should try to look for ways out [of the current situation towards intensifying the relations]. The main thing is to have peace in our countries, in our regions. I hope for the best.”

When asked whether Georgia sees Belarus' desire to establish a closer dialogue, Giorgi Saganelidze said: “Yes, absolutely. This is a two-way movement. In any communication it is always necessary to develop further relations if two or more (if we are talking about multilateral relations) parties wish so. Both the authorities of Belarus and Georgia have such a desire. I think that if we try very hard, everything will work out.”
