MINSK, 20 February (BelTA) – The main political objective of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to keep increasing the role of Belarus in regional and international decision-making, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said at an extended session of the board of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 20 February, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei noted that the year 2018 was both challenging and rewarding for Belarus. In his words, in the face of some adverse external factors, the country went ahead with its efforts to secure its sovereignty, pursue an independent, balanced and multi-vector policy, promote integration processes in the Eurasian space, diversify foreign trade and strengthen regional and global security.

“Our major long-term political objective is to keep enhancing Belarus’ role in regional and global politics,” the minister noted.

In his words, as the global security is being increasingly threatened, Belarus’ partners, including those in the west, come to realize the relevance and importance of Belarus’ initiative to launch a new inclusive dialogue similar to the Helsinki process. “In 2019 we are to set to attract more people to this idea and to actively lobby political elites, the society and expert communities,” Vladimir Makei said.

The board of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is taking stock of the work done in 2018 and outlining tasks for the future with a focus on foreign economic activities. Taking part in the meeting are top officials of the ministry, Belarus’ ambassadors, government members and representatives of various ministries.
