Counterterrorism applications of artificial intelligence discussed in Minsk

MINSK, 10 October (BelTA) – Ways to use artificial intelligence were discussed during the international conference on preventing and fighting terrorism in the digital age. The conference is taking place in Minsk on 9-10 October. Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Oleg Kravchenko talked to reporters on the sidelines of the conference, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian deputy minister of foreign affairs noted that artificial intelligence can potentially be used to fight terrorism. In his words, the possibility was discussed during the conference.

While speaking during the conference, Belarusian specialists suggested focusing efforts on cooperation in the sphere of information and communication. They believe that advantages of the Internet can be used to fight terrorism.

Participants of the conference agreed that one can counteract terrorism, including in the information space, only through tighter international cooperation. “Everyone agrees that despite some differences of opinion it is necessary to observe international conventions and develop the international legal base in order to effectively counteract this comparatively new dimension of terrorism,” said Oleg Kravchenko.

The official also noted that governments cannot fight terrorism effectively without full-featured cooperation with private companies and the civil society. “We need joint efforts aimed at counteracting attempts at recruitment, radicalization, and propagation of these harmful ideas,” Oleg Kravchenko was convinced.
