MINSK, 13 March (BelTA) – It would be a good idea to introduce online voting instead of setting up polling stations abroad, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina said in an interview with the Belarus 24 TV channel, BelTA has learned.

There are no plans in Belarus to amend election laws and to introduce voting through e-mail or the Internet. However, should amendments be made, Lidia Yermoshina would “suggest dropping the idea to set up polling places at the embassies abroad. Instead Belarusians living outside the country should have an opportunity to vote via the Internet”.

“A possibility to cast a ballot abroad does not meet the need for voting. People now travel around the world,” she explained.

The CEC head noted that information technology in Belarus is used to inform voters and all participants of election campaigns. They can get the necessary information using special resources, like an electronic map of constituencies and a mobile application that helps voters find their respective polling station and map a route to it.
