Belarus views Georgia as one of its strategic partners

MINSK, 20 November (BelTA) – Belarus regards Georgia as a strategic partner, Speaker of the Council of the Republic of Belarus’ National Assembly Mikhail Myasnikovich noted as he met with Chairman of the Georgian Parliament Irakli Kobakhidze on 20 November, BelTA has learned.

“We give a certain priority to relations with Georgia and view it as one of our strategic partners in the political arena, economic and humanitarian contacts,” Mikhail Myasnikovich said.

In his words, Belarus and Georgia do not have any closed topics. The countries are quite honest with each other when it comes to different matters, including international cooperation. The Belarusian speaker thanked Georgia for active support for Belarus’ position in international organizations.

Mikhail Myasnikovich considers it necessary to intensify Belarus-Georgia interparliamentary contacts, primarily by re-launching friendship groups. “We maintain that friendship groups should not only do the activities mapped out by heads of parliaments but also actively work in an independent way,” he added.

Mikhail Myasnikovich stressed that the parliaments should keep creating the conditions for expanding fruitful regional economic cooperation and business contacts. All the documents adopted by the two parliaments are aimed at these goals.

In turn, Irakli Kobakhidze pointed to the high level of Belarus-Georgia relations in various fields and assured that the Georgian parliament is ready to do its best to develop them. The speaker also noted that Georgia is grateful to the Belarusian government and parliament for continuous support of Georgia’s interests.

Georgian MPs are in Belarus on an official visit from 20 to 22 November. They are expected to visit the automobile engineering company BelAZ, the agricultural company Agrokombinat Snov, and the Hi-Tech Park. They will also meet with faculty members and students of Belarusian State University. Following the visit, Belarus’ National Assembly and the Parliament of Georgia will adopt a joint statement.
