Belarus to partake in new IAEA project to increase radiation safety

MINSK, 18 March (BelTA) – Belarus will take part in a new project of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with a view to increasing radiation safety, BelTA learned from Mikhail Kovalenko, Head of the Radiation Monitoring Service of the National Center for Hydrometeorology, Radioactive Pollution Control, and Environmental Monitoring of the Belarusian Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry, on 18 March.

According to the source, the project is supposed to be implemented in 2020-2025 and targets the European-Asian region. As many as 33 countries will participate in it. Belarus is expected to play an active role in the project.

The project is supposed to fill gaps in the legislation, which regulates radiation protection. It will also help improve qualifications of the relevant specialists.

Information about radiation monitoring systems and programs in European and Asian countries has been disclosed before the project begins. The information testifies that a powerful and stable monitoring system meeting the IAEA’s requirements and recommendations has been created in Belarus.

The official reminded that the IAEA’s technical aid project meant to modernize and expand the network for monitoring radiation in the atmospheric air was finished in 2015. The project's funding was used to deliver modern equipment to Belarus. Specialists of the National Center for Hydrometeorology, Radioactive Pollution Control, and Environmental Monitoring also went through internship courses in leading European institutions.
