Belarus supports strengthening of international cooperation against human trafficking

MINSK, 31 July (BelTA) - Belarus’ Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna Alena Kupchyna took part in the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) event to mark the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Speaking on behalf of Belarus and as the chairperson of the 28th session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, Alena Kupchyna emphasized the country’s efforts throughout the past 15 years to intensify international cooperation against trafficking in persons.

Alena Kupchyna stressed the importance of keeping the issue as one of the priorities of the UN agenda, the need to record and provide appropriate response to modern trends and forms of this crime and continue concrete and tangible actions to fight it at the national level and increase efforts to further strengthen international cooperation in the area.

Speaking at the event was UNODC Executive Director Yury Fedotov. Taking part in the format of a teleconference were also the permanent representative of Fiji and representatives of non-government organizations of Italy and Nigeria. Video messages came from heads of ministries and agencies of Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Malawi and Malaysia. The participants of the event reported on their advanced experience in combating human trafficking, existing problems and challenges.

The World Day Against Trafficking in Persons was declared by the UN General Assembly in 2013 to raise awareness of the plight of human trafficking victims, and protect their rights. The day has been marked annually on 30 July since 2014.
