Belarus president calls for OSCE’s reform, bigger role in conflict resolution

Belarus president calls for OSCE’s reform, bigger role in conflict resolution

MINSK, 5 July (BelTA) – It is necessary to reform the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and increase the organization’s role in conflict resolution. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the statement as he met with top officials of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly on 5 July, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Lukashenko stated: “The OSCE is unique. I am confident that the organization should respond to acute situations in our region and it should do that at the highest level, the level of heads of state. But look how many negative things have happened in Europe recently. What was our response? The response of the heads of state? There was none. A war is going on in Europe and there is no response. It means that our organization has problems.”

The Belarusian leader stressed: “Problems need to be resolved at the very start just like illnesses should be treated at the very beginning. If we let the process develop, you know what it can lead to. It is necessary to respond to such conflicts and respond seriously. The matter of the OSCE reform for the sake of making the organization more efficient and decisive is getting more and more important these days.”

Alexander Lukashenko remarked that OSCE parliamentarians regularly hold sessions and discuss problems within their power. “I would like the parliamentarians to nudge us towards discussing these burning issues, too,” he said.

“It is extremely necessary for the OSCE heads of state to meet up and discuss very important and serious problems. I’d be very grateful if the matter is given due consideration during the Minsk session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. I think our region will benefit from it,” added the Belarus president.
