Belarus plans to increase trade with Georgia almost threefold within two years

MINSK, 1 March (BelTA) – Belarus plans to increase its trade with Georgia almost threefold to $200 million within the next two years, Belarusian Vice Premier Mikhail Rusy told the media, BelTA has learned.

“We have set forth a task to reach $200 million in mutual trade in the near future. If we take a look at the previous year, we will see good progress. Our work has been systemized and we can say that we will complete 2018 with $200 million in mutual trade and 2017 at some $120-140 million. We can do it,” the vice premier said.

According to Mikhail Rusy, the two countries have been developing close trade and economic cooperation, including the setting up of joint companies. The countries are mulling over the production of elevators in Georgia. Georgia also shows interest in the Belarusian practices of building sports facilities.

Belarus is also making headway in food exports to Georgia. Two Belarusian stores have already been operating in Georgia, with one more to be opened in the near future. The Belarusian store chain has been developing as well.

“Today we are expected to sign a contract on the delivery of 90 Belarus tractors to Georgia. We are also considering joint assembling of small tractors. The same work is carried out with MAZ vehicles,” the Vice Premier said.

There are good prospects for the supplies of Belarusian farming machinery to Georgia and sharing agricultural technologies. In 2016 the trade between the two countries totaled $73.2 million (163% over 2015). The exports made up $57.4 million (a 2.6 time increase), while the imports reached $15.8 million (up 70.2%). Belarus exported 318 commodity items to Georgia last year.
