Belarus’ military doctrine ‘has always been defensive’

Belarus’ military doctrine ‘has always been defensive’

MINSK, 12 February (BelTA) – Belarus’ military doctrine has always been purely defensive, BelTA learned from Major-General Oleg Belokonev, Chief of the General Staff of the Belarusian army, on 12 February.

“Our country is a peace-loving one. The previous doctrine and the current one are purely defensive. We don’t have any territorial claims to anyone. Our national interests never go beyond our state borders,” said the Chief of the General Staff.

Oleg Belokonev reminded that the previous Military Doctrine was adopted in 2002. The new revision was approved by the Belarus president on 22 January 2016.

The Military Doctrine represents a system of state views on ensuring the country’s military security. The new document was developed by quite a large team, which included the State Secretariat of the Security Council, the Defense Ministry, the General Staff, and all the government agencies that are part of the national security system.

The Major-General noted that since the previous document was adopted, challenges and threats have changed as well as armed warfare methods. New armed conflicts have emerged in various regions. These conflicts differ from each other at first glance but they have the same origin. “Which is domestic disruptions of the operation of the state,” said Oleg Belokonev. The new doctrine was developed by analyzing all these facts.

The Chief of the General Staff also pointed out: “Nothing will change in the life of our country, in the operation of the army and other organizations. We have just specified and re-determined threats to the national security and the essence of what is going on around us. One more time we demonstrate to the entire world that we are peace-loving nation. We are not inclined to wage wars. We will not allow anyone to interfere with our internal affairs.”
