Belarus, Latvia urged to make most of transit potential

MINSK, 16 January (BelTA) – Belarus and Latvia should actively utilize their transit capacities, Belarusian Prime Minister Sergei Rumas said as he met with Latvian Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins on 16 January, BelTA has learned.

“Being neighbors and countries with a great transit potential we should build a constructive and pragmatic dialogue and make the most of our geopolitical location. Transport and logistics have always been a strategic area of our cooperation,” Sergei Rumas said.

The premier suggested discussing the areas that hold the biggest promise for the bilateral cooperation. In his words, Belarus and Latvia have made much progress in promoting cooperation in information technology and tourism. “Belarus has offered unprecedented terms for business in the Hi-Tech Park and the Great Stone industrial park. We see the interest of the Latvian business community in these parks,” the Belarusian head of government said.

Sergei Rumas noted that Latvia is one of Belarus’ biggest trading partners and investors. “I am convinced that the insignificant setback in the bilateral trade in 2019 will be reversed this year. After all, in addition to traditional avenues of cooperation we are promoting hi-tech industries; we cooperate successfully in the investment field; the number of joint business projects keeps growing,” the prime minister said.

In his words, the mid-term intergovernmental action plan incorporates all areas of cooperation, from transport and logistics to healthcare and eduction. This plan sets the guidelines for the Belarus-Latvia commission for trade, economic and sci-tech cooperation, Sergei Rumas added.
