Belarus’ humanitarian efforts in other countries praised by ICRC

Belarus’ humanitarian efforts in other countries praised by ICRC

MINSK, 8 November (BelTA) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) praises Belarus’ humanitarian efforts in other countries, ICRC President Peter Maurer said as he met with Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko in Minsk on 8 November, BelTA informs.

Peter Maurer emphasized that the International Committee of the Red Cross and Belarus have maintained very good relations for many years, and now the time has come to advance them to a higher level. “I have come to Belarus on a visit to sign the documents concerning the opening of an ICRC representational office next year,” he said.

“Belarusian people, the government, and you personally support the activities of the committee. By doing so, you also support the international humanitarian law which is a guideline for us,” Peter Maurer said.

He remarked that the world has become much more complicated and polarized recently, and the humanitarian consequences of conflicts are a pervasive problem.

Peter Maurer thanked the Belarusian president for the assistance provided to the ICRC. “Today the activities of the International Committee of the Red Cross hugely depend on the support of such countries as Belarus which are committed to the regulation of conflicts in the world, are doing their best for the rapprochement of conflicting parties and for encouraging them to sit at the negotiating table. Thank you for your contribution,” the ICRC president said.
