Belarus-EU relations advance without damaging Russian interests

Belarus-EU relations advance without damaging Russian interests

MINSK, 7 June (BelTA) – Economic relations between Belarus and the European Union are developed without damaging Russian interests. Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich made the statement after negotiations with Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia Valentina Matviyenko on 7 June, BelTA has learned.

A Russian reporter asked about the development of Belarus’ interaction with the European Union in economic affairs. She was interested in whether it could damage the strategic partnership with Russia. Mikhail Myasnikovich said that it is necessary to capitalize upon multilateral cooperation. “We build normal respectful relations with other countries, too. It does not mean that they should cause harm to Russia,” he remarked. “We also treat with respect the decisions made by Russia with regard to cooperation with third countries.”

Valentina Matviyenko noted that neither Russia nor Belarus are intent on self-isolation and are ready for mutually beneficial cooperation with other integration associations and countries on equal terms while taking into account each other’s interests. She also pointed out that in the course of advancing relations with third countries both Belarus and Russia should take into account their previously accepted commitments within the framework of the Union State of Belarus and Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union so that the development of relations would not contradict interests of the already established integration associations. “It is the way our countries act. We always arrange consultations for the sake of working out a coordinated stance,” she added.
