Belarus 2019 parliamentary elections more accessible for voters with disabilities

Belarus 2019 parliamentary elections more accessible for voters with disabilities

MINSK, 12 August (BelTA) – Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina spoke about the novelties of the elections to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the seventh convocation in an interview to the First National Channel of Belarusian Radio, BelTA has learned.

One of them is the accessibility of the elections for people with disabilities. “Special places will be provided for voters in wheelchairs. These will be either low desks or tables for people to be able to enter the booth in a wheelchair, or a special table in a cubicle next to the commission. Moreover, we have discussed with our TV companies the possibility to provide subtitles for the candidates’ speeches so that hearing-impaired people could read them. Tactile voting templates and magnifying glasses will be also provided for blind and partially sighted people,” Lidia Yermoshina said.

A new mobile app will be developed ahead of the elections. “Once all polling stations are set up, some 60 days ahead of the elections, voters will be able to use the app to learn about their polling station and constituency. The app will also provide information about the candidates to the parliament,” the chairperson of the Central Election Commission said.
