Ambassador: Trostenets tragedy builds emotional bonds between Belarus, Austria

MINSK, 28 March (BelTA) – The tragedy of the Trostenets death camp builds emotional bonds between Belarus and Austria, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Austria to the Republic of Belarus Aloisia Woergetter said at the seminar Reassessing Sovereignty in Today’s World arranged by the Minsk Dialogue Track-II Initiative on 28 March, BelTA has learned.

The ambassador recalled that Austrian Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz is set to attend a ceremony to unveil the monument Array of Names in the territory of the former Trostenets death camp.

“Belarus keeps the remains of many our citizens buried in Trostenets. It is an emotional matter,” Aloisia Woergetter said. She emphasized that the two countries are united by the repercussions of that tragedy.

The monument Array of Names commemorates over 10,000 Austrian Jews exterminated in the Trostenets death camp in 1941-1942.  The monument was initiated by the Austrian public organization IM-MER. The lower house of the Austrian parliament unanimously approved the initiative in 2016.
