Ambassador: Belarus-Cuba cooperation has become strategic

MINSK, 30 December (BelTA) – The relations between Belarus and Cuba has reached the level of strategic cooperation, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Cuba to Belarus Gerardo Suarez Alvarez told journalists on 30 December, BelTA has learned.

“The outgoing year has seen many events important for our cooperation. All preconditions for qualitative and quantitative expansion of our ties in 2016 have been created,” Gerardo Suarez Alvarez believes.

The diplomat recalled that the leaders of Belarus and Cuba met during the 70th session of the UN General Assembly in 2015. Besides, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries held consultations. The agreements on cooperation in trade and pharmaceutics signed during the visit of the Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs to Cuba in 2014 came into force. The unique Cuban medicine for the treatment of diabetic foot is already used in Belarus. The country imports some other pharmaceuticals from Cuba, including the vaccine against hepatitis B.

“Next year we should work on a more extensive bilateral program that includes such sectors as industry, agriculture, and others,” Gerardo Suarez Alvarez stressed.

He pointed out that the Cuban side is ready to suggest some 380 projects to investors. “We want to attract Belarusian capital,” the Ambassador noted. In his words, the Belarusian Hi-Tech Park has plans to take part in a Cuban project.

Gerardo Suarez Alvarez said that Cuba operates a considerable fleet of Belarus-made buses. “We import spare parts from Belarus. Transport is a relevant topic for us. Besides, Cuba would like to buy Belarusian fertilizers and develop cooperation in IT,” the Ambassador added.
