Plans for Belarus-Japan friendship commemorative tablet in cherry blossom tree alley in Minsk

MINSK, 28 May (BelTA) – A commemorative tablet to symbolize Belarus-Japan friendship will be unveiled on the campus of Minsk’s secondary school No.97 on 29 May, the school principal Galina Bandik told BelTA.

The tablet resting on a granite pedestal reads “Sakura of friendship”. Teruo Naito, a member of the Belarusian-Japanese friendship society, is the author of the initiative to create the commemorative tablet. He was the one to present cherry blossom tree saplings to the school in the past. The saplings were planted by participants of the 13th congress of children and teenagers from Belarusian and Russian hero cities in 2009.

Galina Bandik said: “At present this alley symbolizes peace between Belarus and Japan and international relations of our institution, which bears the honorable title ‘School of peace’. We received the name slightly more than ten years ago through active participation in the Children Diplomacy Academy program. This is why on the day the commemorative tablet is unveiled, we will also honor children from the school’s peacemaking corps,” added the school principal.

Representatives of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Belarus Hiroki Tokunaga are expected to participate in the event.
