Petals of Lotus and Golden Daisy includes 100 Chinese poems

MINSK, 8 February (BelTA) – The book entitled Petals of Lotus and Golden Daisy includes works by 100 Chinese poets of the 20th century, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of China to Belarus Cui Qiming told the media at BelTA’s press center on 8 February.

According to the ambassador, the collection of poems gives readers the unique opportunity to see the changing China, learn about the thoughts and feelings of the people living in the modern age. These are the sketches that reveal simple things, introduce to the traditions of the Chinese nation. “I am confident that this book will help our Belarusian friends to understand the mentality of the Chinese people, will make its contribution to the strengthening of the friendship between us,” he said.

The collection was put together by holder of the Belarus’ Yanka Kupala State Award, poet and translator Mikola Metlitsky. The collection comprises works from the period of the development of modern China. Among the poets included into the book are Huang Zunxian, Qiu Jin, Su Manshu, Liu Dabai, and others.

Mikola Metlitsky said that he wanted to show the Belarusian reader the spiritual wealth of the Chinese literature. As a poet and translator he said he understood that it was very important to be careful in translating all the colors of the works. “I hope that everyone, who reads this book, will understand China better and see that its fate is largely similar to the fate of the Belarusian nation, as the poems are written from heart,” he said.

Recently there has been a particular interest in the Chinese poetry in Belarus. In 2014 Belarusian publishers started to release regularly the books as part of the series “Light Signs: Poets of China”. Ten Chinese poetry books featuring the poems by Li Bai, Du Fu, Wang Wei and other poets have already been published in Belarus.

The first book “Under the Dragon’s Wings. One Hundred Poets of China” (also translated by Mikola Metlitsky) was published in 2012. The book was honored with the special prize of the President of the Republic of Belarus. The book “Petals of Lotus and Golden Daisy” is a kind of its continuation and greatly extends our knowledge about the rich and unique Chinese poetry, said Alexander Badak, the director of the Mastatskaya Litaratura publishing house.
