Minsk to host high-level international counter-terrorism conference

MINSK, 6 September (BelTA) – Minsk will play host to the high-level international conference on countering terrorism on 9-10 October, Anatoly Glaz, Head of the Information and Digital Diplomacy Office, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told a press briefing on 6 September, BelTA has learned.

The organizers of the event are Belarus’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

“What is special about the conference is that it will deal with two most pressing challenges of our time: counter-terrorism and cyber security. We view the conference as a unifying wide-format event. Belarus will host senior officials of the OSCE, the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. The forum will be attended by high-level representatives of the OSCE participating states and partner countries, the CIS and CSTO leadership, representatives of the business community, and authoritative think tanks,” Anatoly Glaz stressed.

The sessions will consider the following topics: the strengthening of the international legal cooperation, the implementation of the international anti-terrorism laws, protection of critical infrastructure from terrorist attacks. Special attention will be given to the fight against terrorism in the internet. The widespread use of the internet and social networks by terrorists poses serious threats to states, national institutions, the media, the private sector and civil society. It is anticipated that the internet will be a key topic of discussions and debates.

The holding of this conference in Minsk is another practical step that reaffirms Belarus’ consistent efforts to strengthen international cooperation in the areas having the unifying potential such as counter-terrorism and cyber security, Anatoly Glaz noted.
