Medieval festival near Minsk to bring Middle Ages back to life

MINSK, 4 July (BelTA) – The 11th edition of the international festival of medieval culture and music Our Grunwald will be held July in the Dudutki museum complex of folk crafts and technologies on 20-21 July, BelTA learned from the organizers.

The festival is geared to honor the military and secular history of the Middle Ages, the  traditions of the ancestors. The main draw will be the reenactment of the battle of Grunwald which took place on 15 July 1410 between the forces of the Teutonic Knights and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Kingdom of Poland.

About 500 representatives of the military-historical reenactment clubs from Belarus, Russia, and European countries will take part in the festival.

The two-day event will feature knights' fights on foot, tournaments of halberdiers, lances, archers and bugurts (mass joisting fights). A draw of the second festival day will be full-contact fights on horseback according to the rules of the 15th century. Horse tournaments of such level are held at festivals only in a few countries around the world.

A concert program called The Feast After The Battle will be a kind of a medieval open air event. The line-up features folk and rock groups from Belarus, Russia, Europe and America. The headliners include Corvus Corax (Germany), The Midnight (Italy), Skiltron (Argentina), The Land of Legends (Russia), FRAM (Ukraine), Aillion (Belarus), Sakramant (Belarus).

Guests will be be able to learn more about medieval dances and handicrafts and try their hand at manufacturing armor, jewelry, weapons, stone processing, pottery and blacksmithing. The festival will also feature an arts and crafts fair and interactive sites.

Among the organizers are the Berserk Extreme Theater, Alexander Rak, and the museum of ancient crafts and technologies Dudutki.
