Life expectancy in Belarus rises to 73.9 years

MINSK, 7 July (BelTA) - Life expectancy in Belarus has risen by 3.5 years in the last five years to reach 73.9 years in 2015, BelTA learnt from the National Statistics Committee.

The average age of the Belarusian population has increased by 5 years since 1990 and makes up 40.1 years (37.3 for men and 42.5 for women). The average age of city dwellers has risen by 6.8 years since 1990 to total 38.8 years. The average age of rural dwellers has gone up by 3.2 years to 44.5.

The average age of Vitebsk Oblast residents is 41.5 years. Minsk is the youngest region, with the average age of 38.3.

As of the start of 2016, the population of Belarus totaled 9,498,000 people. Belarus with its population is ranked 92nd in the world, 17th among European countries and 6th in the CIS.

The statistical review has been prepared by the Belarusian Statistics Committee to mark World Population Day which is annually celebrated on 11 July. The holiday is observed as a day to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues.
