Lepel District to celebrate Christmas with Tsiareshka's Wedding folk game

VITEBSK, 31 December (BelTA) – The Christmas program in Vitebsk Oblast will kick off with the folk game “Zhanitsba Tsiareshki” (Tsiareshka's Wedding), BelTA learned from Olga Makhanenko, the chairperson of the public council for development of agro-ecotourism in the Vitebsk Oblast, the owner of the Priozernaya rural tourism facility in Lepel District.

The traditional rite will be held on the Lyukzhino farm, Lepel District, on 8 January. The authentic Tsiareshka’s Wedding game has survived only in Lepel District. The game was held in old times so that young people from different villages could meet each other. Every man in this game becomes a Tsiareshka and chooses a partner. The main point of the game is to stage a wedding party with songs, dances and jokes. Exactly this kind of fun game will be arranged on the Lyukzhino farm. By the way, the owner of the farm works to popularize the folk traditions. The farm holds festivals and all kinds of farmers’ ceremonies. Once the farm held a wedding ceremony for a French-Dutch couple in accordance with the authentic Belarusian folk traditions.

"The folk game Tsiareshka's Wedding has been included into the list of Belarus’ historical and cultural heritage. It is unique and spectacular and leaves a lasting impression on lovers of folklore. This is our pride and a full-fledged tourist product,” Olga Makhanenko said.

She added that the community council will convene soon after the event to discuss and adopt the plan of activities for 2016. At present the owners of the estates are busy accommodating guests who have come for Christmas holidays. Olga Makhanenko noted that rural tourism is gaining popularity in Belarus, while Russian tourists more and more frequently prefer to travel within their own country. Not all the estates of the region are filled with guests this holiday season. Still, the most popular ones are full and have already started to receive bookings for summer.
