Judging criteria at Listapad 2017 film announced

MINSK, 3 November (BelTA) – The jury of the international film festival Listapad 2017 named the judging criteria for the works taking part in the competition. Representatives of the panel of judges told a press conference that truth will be the main evaluation criterion, BelTA has learned.

This year, the festival’s motto is Truth, Love, and Beauty. Each of these things can be an evaluation criterion. For Yuri Gorulev, chairman of the jury of the national competition, truth comes first but together with love. He believes that no good film can be made if the director does not love the main character.

Lyudmila Sayenkova, chairperson of the jury of the national film schools competition, thinks that these things complement each other and cannot be split. In her opinion, the motto Pain, Love, Compassion would match the 2017 program more.

Elizabeth Shepherd of the USA, a member of the jury of the children’s contest, chooses truth because it is important as far as the minds of children going to screenings are concerned. Maria Bershadskaya, a Belarusian member of this jury, said that truth should underlie children’s films because children expect to watch pictures about themselves and their lives rather than some entertainment movies.

According to Gennady Kofman (Ukraine), a member of the jury of the main documentary film competition, these three things are a single entity for a true artist. True artists are looking for truth. If they love what they do, they make beautiful films, push the limits, and find a new cinematic language, the director said.

Roman Dorofeyev, a member of the jury of the Youth on the March contest, prefers truth in the meaning “life-like” because when a viewer watches a movie and realizes that it depicts the day-to-day life, this is a touching and important thing.

The Georgian director Rusudan Glurjidze, a member of the jury of the main competition, remarked that truth and love make the world go round. As for the job of a filmmaker, these criteria are essential for directing decent movies.

The opening ceremony of the Listapad 2017 festival will take place on 3 November in the Moskva movie theater. The opening film is Boris Khlebnikov’s Arrhythmia which has already took home the Grand Prix at Russia's national film festival Kinotavr.

The competition program comprises 94 pictures. It is traditionally divided into four sections: feature films (the main competition and the debut film competition Youth on the March); documentaries (the main competition and the contest of national film schools); the Listapadzik children and youth film competition; the national competition (fiction films, documentaries, and animated films).

The main feature and documentary film competitions focus on new movies produced in the former Eastern Bloc countries: the CIS, Central and Southeast Asia, the Baltic states, and Eastern and Central Europe.

The winners will be announced and awarded on 10 November. The festival is to wrap up with a screening of The Samurai in Autumn by Danilo Beckovic (Serbia).

The 24th edition of the Minsk international film festival Listapad will take place on 3-10 November under the Truth, Love, and Beauty slogan. Listapad has been established by the Belarusian Culture Ministry and Minsk City Hall in cooperation with the National TV and Radio Company, the National Film Studio Belarusfilm, and the Belarusian Union of Cinematographers. The festival is organized by the visual and performing arts center ART Corporation.
