International journalism school opens in Minsk

MINSK, 17 September (BelTA) – The international journalism school BY-RU Workshop has been opened in the House of Press in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

Vadim Gigin, one of the project’s initiators, Secretary of the Belarusian Union of Journalists, said that the idea to arrange such a school was born during the 19th World Congress of Russian Press in Minsk in July 2017.

BY-RU Workshop has already been tested in Grodno. Journalism professionals and mass media experts from Belarus and Russia arranged a series of master classes at premises of the Grodzenskaya Prauda newspaper over the course of eight months. The project’s effectiveness was recognized. Requests to arrange another one were received, this is why the project continues and the scale has been increased. Now BY-RU Workshop will work in Grodno and Minsk, said Vadim Gigin. In his opinion, the project can lend a helping hand to rising authors, who will be able to talk to colleagues, learn something new, and talk about topical aspects of mass media and professional mastery.

BY-RU Workshop welcomes young reporters from various parts of the country, who have passed through the selection process and intend to improve their skills. Their training will last for a year.

The first lesson was scheduled for today. “Television using improvised means. How to make topical documentaries” will be taught by the TV host and political observer of the TV channel Russia Konstantin Semin and the reporter, operator, CGI specialist, managing editor of the Agitprop program, co-author of the movie Posledny Zvonok Nikolai Dyakov. Vadim Gigin, Dean of the Philosophy and Social Sciences Chair of the Belarusian State University, Candidate of Historical Sciences, political analyst and publicist, Secretary of the Belarusian Union of Journalists, will deliver a report on mass media transformation.
