Grodno to hold traditional fair Kazyuki on 4 March

GRODNO, 4 March (BelTA) – The traditional fair Kazyuki will be held in Grodno on 4 March, BelTA learned from Director of Grodno Culture Center Andrei Chepelyuk.

Sovyetskaya pedestrian street in the historical center of Grodno will host a fair of handicrafts. Over 200 craftsmen from Belarus, Poland, and Ukraine will gather in Grodno to present their works. The visitors will have an opportunity to see and buy unique handicrafts made from leather, wool, glass, straw, fabrics, beads, metal, wood, and other materials. The craftsmen will demonstrate their skills and give workshops under the open sky.

The opening ceremony of the fair will be held near the Grodno Youth Center at midday. Representatives of public associations and local officials will attend the event. The opening concert will feature folk dancing and singing performances. Besides, the program includes a rite of passage of young craftsmen to masters.

Grodno annually holds the Kazyuki fair to commemorate the patron of young people and craftsmen Saint Casimir. The event is one of the spring signature events of Grodno. Saint Casimir was a grandson of Jogaila and a son of the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania Casimir IV. He lived a short life and died on 4 March 1484. His remains were brought from Grodno to Vilnius. In 1604 Casimir was canonized as the patron saint of Lithuania and of all craftsmen. Lithuanians celebrate the so-called “Kaziukas” with numerous fairs.
