Grodno-Druskininkai cross-border marathon opens registration

Grodno-Druskininkai cross-border marathon opens registration

GRODNO, 11 January (BelTA) – The cross-border marathon between Belarus' Grodno and Lithuania's Druskininkai will start on 14 July, BelTA learned from the Sports and Tourism Department of the Grodno Oblast Executive Committee.

The registration for the marathon has already opened. Runners can get registered online on the official website of the marathon. About 20 running enthusiasts from Belarus, Lithuania, Slovakia, Poland and Norway have already submitted their applications. Last year about 100 athletes from 10 countries took part in the race.

“The International Marathon of Friendship will be held for the ninth time already. This marathon runs through the territory of two countries. There are virtually no marathons like that. The participants of the marathon will not have to stop at the border, as the border control will be done at the start and finish of the race,” the Sports and Tourism Department informed. They expect that the visa waiver in effect in Grodno and the neighboring area will draw more participants to the marathon.

The start and the finish are swapped after each race. In 2018, the athletes began the race in Druskininkai. This year, the race will get underway at Grodno’s central sports center. The finish line will be situated in the center of Druskininkai. The race covers a total of 42.195 kilometers and is certified by the International Association of Athletics Federations. The winners will be announced in the overall standings and several age groups.

The participants of the marathon will be offered an exciting cultural program, excursions and concerts. All of them will get a unique medal which design changes every year.

The Grodno-Druskininkai marathon will become a stage of a unique running project launched in Grodno Oblast in 2018. The so-called Grodno Running League features the highest-ranked races of the season. The athletes and teams will score points after each race to compete for the Grand Prix in several categories: general classification, team classification, and others.
