Funambulists from Belarus’ Mozyr to partake in international circus festival in Cuba

The circus center Arena GOMEL, 7 June (BelTA) – Tightrope walkers from the Mozyr-based circus center Arena will represent Belarus at one of the oldest international circus festivals Circuba for the first time. The festival will take place in Cuba’s capital, Havana from 25 June to 2 July, BelTA learned from the center’s director Natalia Daineko.

The performers from Mozyr will present their act Funambulists that won the silver prize of the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival in January 2017. The culture center Carpa Trompoloco, the venue of the festival, will also see acts by circus performers from Latin America, Asia, and Europe, including such countries as the United States, China, Brazil, Japan, Canada, Mexico, and others.

Founded in 1981, Circuba is one of the three oldest international circus festivals. The trio also features the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival (1974) and Festival Mondial du Cirque de Demain (The World Festival of the Circus of Tomorrow), the first edition of which took place in Paris in 1977.

The culture center Carpa Trompoloco is the pride of the Cuban circus art. Inaugurated in the summer of 2005, the center seats over 2,000 spectators. It is named after the famous Cuban clown Erdwin Fernandez. Carpa Trompoloco houses the national circus of Cuba, and it is the official venue of the international festival Circuba 2017.

The circus center Arena was founded in 2006. Today it has about 100 students, including acrobats, trapeze artists, balancers, jugglers, and tightrope walkers. In 2014, the Belarusian head of state presented the special prize For Spiritual Revival to the personnel of the center in recognition of the big contribution to the promotion of amateur circus art.
