Exhibition to mark 200th anniversary of Stanislaw Moniuszko opens in Moscow

MOSCOW, 12 April (BelTA) - The Business and Cultural Complex of the Belarusian Embassy in Russia hosted an event timed to the 200th anniversary of the outstanding Belarusian composer Stanislaw Moniuszko, BelTA learned from the press service of the embassy.

“Stanislaw Moniuszko is a classical composer of global significance,” Senior Counselor of the Embassy, Head of the Business and Cultural Center Vasily Chernik said. “He went down in history as the founder of two national operas. He wrote the first Belarusian (Idyll) and the first Polish (Halka) operas as well as a lot of operettas and ballets. UNESCO declared the year 2019 as the year of Stanislaw Moniuszko,” he added.

Vasily Chernik pointed out that despite his leaving Minsk Stanislaw Moniuszko was always beckoned by his native city where his first operettas The Bureaucrats, The Lottery, and The Conscription were staged. His music, inspired by Belarusian folklore, was played in Minsk saloons of the 19th century. Stanislaw Moniuszko’s legacy includes not only operas, operettas, romances, cantatas, but also over 300 songs to words by Adam Mickiewicz, Jan Czeczot, Wladyslaw Syrokomla, Antoni Odyniec, Tomasz Zan, and others which were united into 12 Songbooks for Home Use.

The guests of the event listened to the concert consisting solely of the composer’s works. The program was performed by students of the Belarusian State Academy of Music, winners of the 1st Stanislaw Moniuszko National Open Vocalists Contest.

The embassy also launched an exhibition of Belarus’ National History Museum which displays replicas of Czeslav Moniuszko’s, the composer’s father, paintings: landscapes, portraits of family members. The exhibition also features music books, posters, photos from theater performances, works of contemporary artists dedicated to the composer’s anniversary.

Taking part in the event were representatives of the Standing Committee and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, the CIS Executive Committee, the Eurasian Economic Commission, people of science and culture, Moscow and local Belarusian diaspora art intellectuals.
