MINSK, 9 January (BelTA) - After Stage 2 Sergei Vyazovich's crew of Belarus' MAZ-SPORTavto team crossed the finish line 11th, 12th overall in the truck category, 44:10 behind the winner. Finishing was unsuccessful: 200m before the Special Stage finish the truck, running at a high speed, got into a sandy trap and overturned, BelTA learned from the Belarusian MAZ-SPORTavto team Facebook page.

The crew members are well while the truck got damaged. Aleksei Vishnevsky’s crew came to the help of Sergei Vyazovich’s teammates.

According to Sergei Vyazovich, the racers remembered from last year that there was a 'step' of sorts and a steep descent in this area. “Having climbed this ‘step’ we started accelerating to the finish line trying to reach the maximum speed. It turned out that during the year winds made a new ‘step’. As a result, we turned over to the right side,” Sergei Vyazovich said, noting that the crew lost about 30 minutes due to the mistake.

Despite this incident, Sergei Vyazovich's crew improved its results compared to Stage 1. Vyazovich’s team finished 14th, with a 10:27 lag. Eduard Nikolayev’s crew (KamAZ) won Stage 2 clocking in 3:47:51. Aleksei Vishnevsky finished 12th, having moved up to the 11th position overall (41:10 behind the winning time) from 9th position at Stage 1. Alexander Vasilevsky’s crew moved from the 17th to the 13th spot, 13th in the overall standings.

Dakar 2019 Stage 2 ran between the cities of Pisco - San Juan De Marcona. The route was 553km long, with the special of 324km.

The 2019 Dakar race is run solely in Peru over a total of 5,000 kilometers and 11 days. More than half of the route runs through sandy roads with huge dunes and other obstacles.
