MINSK, 29 January (BelTA) – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Romania Andrei Grinkevich met with Cristina Toma, the manager of the National Museum of Maps and Old Books in Bucharest, to give the museum the facsimile edition “Book Heritage of Francysk Skaryna”, BelTA learned from the embassy.

This year the National Museum of Maps and Old Books will host an exhibition which will display this edition. Currently the embassy together with Romanian scholars are verifying the information that Belarusian book printer Francysk Skaryna lived and worked for a while in the territory which is now part of Romania.

Andrei Grinkevich and Cristina Toma discussed projects of cooperation between the National Museum of Maps and Old Books and Belarusian institutions of culture. Consideration was given to a project to make electronic facsimile copies of maps that are in possession of the Romanian museum and which shows the territory of Belarus in the 14th - 19th centuries, which will be subsequently transferred to the Belarusian scientific and cultural institutions.

The National Museum of Maps and Old Books fully opened to the public in 2003. The main collection belonged to Professor Adrian Nastase’s family and was donated to the Romanian state. Adrian Nastase was prime minister of Romania in 2000-2004, minister for foreign affairs of Romania in 1990-1992 (signed a protocol on establishing diplomatic relations with Belarus in 1992), president of the Chamber of Deputies of Romania in 2004-2006. To date, the museum holds more than 1,000 artifacts, most of which date to the 16th-20th centuries.
