MINSK, 1 February (BelTA) – Belarusian State University (BSU) took the fourth place in the ranking of the universities in the CIS member states, BelTA learned from Webometrics Ranking of World Universities website.

Lomonosov Moscow State University leads among the CIS universities (the 216th in the world ranking). It is followed by Saint Petersburg State University and Novosibirsk State University (the 526th and the 548th). In January 2017, BSU is the 637th among more than 22,000 higher education institutions covered in the ranking. At the same time, the university has dropped by three positions as compared to August 2016 when it was the 634th. BSU has kept its position in the Webometrics ranking for the last several years by remaining in the top 2-3% of the world’s universities (taking into consideration that there are more than 30,000 higher education institutions in the world).

BSU outperforms other Belarusian universities in the Webometrics ranking. It is followed by Belarusian National Technical University (the 2891st in the world) and Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno (the 3122nd in the world). Maxim Tank Belarusian State Pedagogical University has significantly improved its position in the ranking (it is the 9th among Belarusian higher education institutions now).

Harvard, Stanford and Massachusetts Universities are the traditional leaders of the Webometrics ranking.

The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). The Webometrics uses the cybermetric indicators to measure scientific activity on the Web, including electronic publications. The ranking is published twice a year.
