Belarusian films to debut at Northern Lights festival

MINSK, 7 October (BelTA) – The 6th Nordic-Baltic Film Festival in Belarus Northern Lights will be held online on 22-29 October. The program will feature Belarusian films for the first time, organizers told BelTA.

“The festival will showcase 28 films, including 15 international full-length films, eight documentaries from Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and five short features from Sweden. The first Belarusian program at the festival will feature eight films, more than half of which to be directorial debuts. The Northern Lights industrial platform will display seven events which will be broadcast in the social networks,” the organizers said.

The Belarusian program will comprise well-known names such as Victor Asliuk (Epitaph), Andrei Kutsila (I Need the Handshakes), Yuliya Shatun (Boundaries), and Daria Yushkevich (Invisible Paradise).

Artsiom Lobach will present his Way Home about young people and their belonging in the changing world. Sasha Stelchenko’s psychological drama Deserter is a diploma film of the Minsk film director. In-Touch, the debut short films by Maxim Shved, Ksenia Golubovich, Ales Lapo, and Veronika Bondarovich, are united by the topic of a social role of internet in modern life.

The international program will include Erik Hemmendorff’s Sasong (Sweden), the winner of CPH:DOX Award. Visitors will see the Estonian film Prazdnik about beauty pageants. The film premiered at the White Nights festival in Tallinn. Truth and Justice is a film adaptation of the same-name book by Estonia’s Anton Tammsaare. Lithuania’s Exemplary Behavior explores the paradox of exemplary behavior of murderers. The film won the Golden Dove of the international competition at DOK Leipzig in Germany.

This year’s industrial platform consists of seven events that address the issues of understanding art and its interpretation in film or painting, closeness of Belarusian culture and Belarusians to their neighbors from Northern Europe. There will also be a big discussion about how the film community has changed after the #metoo movement.
