Belarus to present five short films at Cannes

MINSK, 2 May (BelTA) – Belarusfilm national studio is set to take five short pictures to the 66th Cannes Film Festival that is due on 15-26 May, BelTA learnt from Belarusfilm Director General Oleg Silvanovich.

The films will not take part in the main competition program. They will make part of a special program Short Film Corner. The section was created in 2004 to present projects of young producers to professionals. The forum also runs lectures and master-classes that help cinematographers from different countries establish contacts.

The Belarusian animated entries will include Alexander Lenkin’s premiere A Fish Called Must Not-3 and Mikhail Tumelya’s My Experience of Serving the Landlord, a cartoon that has already got a number of prizes at international festivals.

Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby starring Leonardo DiCaprio will open the 66th Cannes Film Festival. The main competition program will include 19 films. Among them are pictures of the Coen brothers, Roman Polanski and Takashi Miike. U.S. director Steven Spielberg will head Cannes 2013 jury.

In 2012 Sergei Loznitsa’s In the Fog shot jointly with Belarusfilm national studio was awarded a prestigious prize of the International Federation of Film Critics FIPRESCI at the 65th Film Festival in Cannes.
