Belarus to attend UN Youth Climate Summit

Belarus to attend UN Youth Climate Summit

MINSK, 30 August (BelTA) – Belarus will take part in the UN Youth Climate Summit that will take place at the United Nations headquarters in New York on 21 September. The country at the forum will be represented by activist Irina Ponedelnik, BelTA has learned.

The organizing committee received 7,000 applications and invited 100 representatives from various countries to attend the forum. The summit will be used by youth leaders to showcase their projects on climate change.

“The summit proves that the world community views as important the ideas that the youth suggest,” the activist said.

Irina Ponedelnik is the founder and coordinator of the Youth for Sustainable Development initiative. The initiative is an international partner of the global survey MyWorld 2030 and a member of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network SDSN Youth. Irina Ponedelnik is also the coordinator of VuzEcoFest festival in Belarus. Every April, universities host dozens of ecological events to improve the environment and implement the green university concept.

The Youth Climate Summit is a key milestone in the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Action Summit which calls on leaders from governments, business and civil society to increase their efforts to address climate change. Applications for participation were announced in Abu Dhabi in early July, at a meeting that brought together more than 1,700 people from more than 160 countries.
